Olivia Wilde Is Every Mother

Social media is abuzz over actress Olivia Wilde, who posed breastfeeding her infant son Otis in photos taken for the September issue of Glamour Magazine. Although the artistic photos received a glowing reception from Wilde's Twitter followers, an onslaught of negative comments ensued as they went viral. The backlash reflects our culture's skewed view of femininity, which ultimately stigmatizes the most natural maternal behaviors. Despite all of the attention on breastfeeding, the controversy distracts from the important issue of creating meaningful policy changes to support families, including women who are trying to breastfeed.

Wilde addressed the heart of her message on Twitter, posting, “Thanks @glamourmag for knowing there’s nothing indecent about feeding a hungry baby.”

One stunning image of Wilde partially exposed nursing her unclothed infant son inspired some to call her "my hero." Still many others accused her of being inconsiderate of onlookers, calling her actions "disgusting" and admonishing her to "just please be discreet" and cover herself in public. One medical expert went so far as to suggest Wilde was inflicting psychological harm on her own child.

Wilde honestly shared the beauty and intimacy of her experience, telling Glamour, “Breastfeeding is the most natural thing....I don’t know, now it feels like Otis should always be on my breast....Being shot with Otis is so perfect because any portrait of me right now isn’t complete without my identity as a mother being a part of that.”

This week marks the 22nd World Breastfeeding Week. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), in collaboration with WHO and UNICEF, promotes the health benefits of nursing in 175 countries around the world as "key intervention for improving child survival... improv[ing] newborn care, and reduc[ing] neonatal mortality." The message is especially critical in developing nations, where breastfeeding actually reduces the risk of malnutrition and disease.

While applauded for championing maternal health around the world, Wilde is now seen in America as one of the Hollywood celebrity moms who "glamorizes" breastfeeding—a shallow media-driven perception that seems out of touch with reality.

Although naturally beautiful, breastfeeding is hardly glamorous. It is doubtful that any woman who has experienced breastfeeding would view Wilde as any different, a loving mother.

Wilde herself did not seem to focus on the glamour. "I certainly don't really look like that when I'm [typically] breast-feeding," she acknowledged in regard to the Robert Cavalli dress and Prada heels worn in the photo shoot. "And there's usually a diaper involved."

Both the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend exclusively breastfeeding an infant for the first six months of life. Yet, in America, social stigma and lack of policies to support mothers remain major factors that hurt breastfeeding outcomes. In addition to these systemic and cultural barriers, breastfeeding does not come easily to every woman and in some cases is not possible.

Even for the most successful nursing mother, breastfeeding is a commitment that is almost certainly exhausting, occasionally painful, and at times alienating. Devoting her body to provide her child's sustenance is a loving sacrifice that comes with sacred reward. Whether for three months or three years, breastfeeding is a labor of love.

A mother of young children needs self-care while nourishing, bonding, nurturing, and imprinting with love, but she is bombarded with expectations and judgments that cause her to question her very worthiness.

The early decisions and struggles of motherhood are often a deeply spiritual journey in acceptance and letting go.

Within our mainstream American culture, we trivialize the maternal experience through disrespectful social debate and stigma. Our collective consciousness reinforces messages that quiet the spirit of the mother and separate her from her child, who still desperately needs her. Our misguided attitudes ignore the critical importance of attachment, which helps children become secure, resilient, compassionate individuals in society.

No matter her situation or circumstances, all mothers are vulnerable and in need of unconditional loving support. Halting our tendency to doubt, judge, criticize, or condemn, we must show genuine human compassion.

"These are the moments a mother lives for," Wilde noted. "Breastfeeding should not be taboo—and bottle feeding should not be judged—it's ALL fun for the whole family."

Olivia Wilde is every mother. While the images are stunning, her words are just as powerful. Hopefully, her statement helps spark action that supports mothers. In both public discourse and in public policy—whether breastfeeding or not, covered or not—we must respect every mother.

Now Is Always the Time to Give Love

As I celebrated my birthday six years ago on February 28, 2008, six weeks after the birth of our first child, I had an idea about love. At a small birthday gathering, I asked guests not to bring gifts unless they were to bring newborn items for babies in need. Soon I had one-hundred donated items.

Still not yet sure of how I could meaningfully serve others, I prayed on my birthday and for the next six days. On March 6, while rocking our newborn to sleep in a dark nursery, I felt overwhelmingly grateful for our love bug. In that gratitude, I found a name for my mission, Love Bug Bundles.

Over the past six years, we have worked to give love to families in need. With the tremendous support of the community, we have been able to do big things like host fundraisers for newborns while we still had newborns ourselves and even collect 13,408 diapers in one morning. We have also done very small things like give a one-year-old a winter coat just in time for last week's harsh weather in Houston and send a safe stroller to a grandmother caring for her new grandson in the very south of Mexico.

There is no measure for these big and small efforts to serve others. In all these ways, my only hope has been to make life better for others and my only regret has been that this work is still insufficient. I am truly grateful we have accomplished the big and small things, but I am most grateful to feel a sense of insufficiency. Although I believe even the smallest act of kindness is worthwhile, I pray that I always see the work we have done as not enough. There is so very much more to do in this world, there are so very many in need, we have so great a journey to one peace.

I am grateful for another unexpected part of Love Bug Bundles...the collective work of all our babies, our smallest supporters. In the earliest days, our two-year-old son helped me prepare newborn bundles for what he called "the babies" and precariously transport infant bath tubs that were practically his size. For our Fair Day, many young children brought diapers and participated in the kick ball tournament with their families. At our art gallery soirée, two poised young women presented a stunning South Indian classical dance performance for our guests. And one spring, a local Brownie Troop earned their baby shower badge by collecting donations for three mothers and babies.

Our children need to see that compassion is everything and they see best by doing.

I thank you for every way you have supported me, our board, and the people Love Bug Bundles serves. We are all one. We must remember our humanity. Remember compassion as our purpose. Take responsibility for the pain we see in our world.

As we celebrate our sixth anniversary, I ask you to always see now as the acceptable time to give love. Help your children live out compassion. And, whether you can give something big or small, always pray. The world needs you. Thank you for everything. Hope to see you soon. xoxo

Once upon a silent night five years ago...

Once upon a silent night five years ago, within a dark nursery, on a soft brown chair, wrapped in his mother's loving arms, a seven-week-old Love Bug fell peacefully asleep. Savoring the warmth of her child's little body, feeling their hearts beating together, the mother realized the name for an idea that had been stirring inside her since his birth. Love Bug Bundles.

My vision for Love Bug Bundles was to build a movement to support mothers and make each newborn's introduction to the world one complete with basic necessities that promote safety, well-being, and loving bonds.

As a new mother myself, I knew the time surrounding pregnancy and childbirth represents one of the most vulnerable yet rewarding periods in a woman’s life. Ensuring her physical and mental well-being helps ensure the well-being of each newborn baby. No matter the circumstances of her pregnancy and delivery, every mother deserves compassion and support.

Over the past five years, we have worked to help mothers and their newborns start their lives together in positive ways. We are deeply grateful for all of the special, generous, encouraging, and compassionate people who have given their support and talents to Love Bug Bundles.

From the first guests at our Launch Party who generously embraced a new cause, to the families who rallied to collect 13,408 diapers for Fair Day—you amaze us with your ability to rise.

From the moms' and church groups that organized their own charity baby showers, to non-profit groups that have become partners—you amaze us with your commitment.

From young professionals who opened doors to valuable resources in their fields, to business leaders who sponsored our events—you amaze us with your talent and generosity.

From a special family welcoming twins to a sweet group of girls in Brownie Troop 25346—you amaze us with your compassion.

To our dear board members—you amaze us with every way you have shared your time, money, talents, and hearts.

We thank each and every individual who has helped us fulfill our mission. We hope you know how much you give a mother and child when you share just a little love.

Since 2008, core to our founding mission to serve mothers and babies in need has been the desire to spread love in the smallest ways. We embarked on this mission with these inspiring words:
"In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.
Love begins by taking care of the closest ones – the ones at home."
—Mother Teresa
Thank you for being a part of the journey, and we look forward to continuing forward with you!

Happy Birthday Love Bug #3

It is so hard to believe our third Love Bug, Evangeline Sejal, turns 1 today. Our children and so many others are our greatest inspiration for the work that we do. Thank you for your wonderful, wonderful support since the beginning only 4.5 years ago.

As an entirely volunteer-run organization, we are so deeply grateful for the support of our donors, volunteers, and beloved board members. The gift of three children in a short 3.5 year span has meant that we didn't always get to focus on the mission of Love Bug Bundles. However, we have done the most we have been able and look forward to doing so much more.

Thank you again for EVERYTHING, and please stay in touch to hear about upcoming activities.

xoxo,
Sarah & Shervin

Reaching the Unreached...with YOU

Since 2008, core to our founding mission to serve mothers and babies in need has been the desire to spread love in the smallest ways. We embarked on this mission with these inspiring words:

In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.

Love begins by taking care of the closest ones – the ones at home.

~Mother Teresa

Original Love Bug Bundle, 2008

During the past four years, we have been blessed to receive your support in so many amazing ways, from dollars and diapers to encouragement and evangelism. Many of you have also offered your time, and we have been working hard to find the best way to take you up on your generous offer.

Because you are such a special part of Love Bug Bundles, we are announcing a new little program called "Reaching the Unreached." From time to time, we are blessed to receive unexpected donations. We want to ensure that these gifts go to someone who truly needs them. Each of you knows a parent in need, whether it is a sister or a cousin, a neighbor or a service person. We want to help YOU help that someone.

Here is your first opportunity to become involved with "Reaching the Unreached"...

First Chance Foundation: Comfort Packages

Today we would like to honor and thank the First Chance Foundation, which recently donated 9 Comfort Packages to help support the mission of Love Bug Bundles. First Chance Foundation is based in Bulverde, Texas and was created in 2006 to generate the financial resources to help fund children’s charities that are helping provide that first chance every single day. We are grateful to receive their support.

Because of the generosity of First Chance Foundation, we currently have 9 Comfort Packages (4 girl, 5 boy) and want to help YOU share YOUR love and support with someone YOU know. Each package contains a towel, washcloth, shampoo, conditioner, and soap, as well as other small toiletries or baby items. Let us know with a comment here, e-mail, or a post on Facebook. We will arrange to deliver the bundle to you in the greater Houston or San Antonio areas.

Comfort Packages from First Chance Foundation

This program is about doing small things with love. Sometimes life is so busy that we think we cannot help someone in need. As a small volunteer-run organization, we have seen that even the smallest gift to a family in need makes a difference.

Thank you again for every way you have supported Love Bug Bundles in the past. We look forward to growing the "Reaching the Unreached" program with you.

A small selection of Mother Teresa's wisdom and grace:

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.

If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one.

Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go.

Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.

Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do... but how much love we put in that action.

Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.

Are you mom enough?

You couldn't have missed last month's provocative TIME magazine cover, which posed the question "Are you mom enough?" Most mothers question their "enoughness" on a daily basis. Of course, the vast majority of mothers are more than mom enough.

Attachment parenting is nothing new and neither is the controversy surrounding it. Let's advance the conversation and stop sensationalizing the image of the modern American mother. What is the point of isolating and demoralizing mothers? Why is it so disturbing to see a mother mothering? How does it help to stigmatize natural behaviors like breastfeeding and baby wearing? When will we liberate women to achieve in every realm of life?

And, where are the images capturing the love, sacrifice, and intimacy of motherhood? Here are some we love...

Stunning image and insightful words from singer Pink...“I felt that the article in TIME on attachment parenting was unfortunately a tad extreme. I support attachment parenting 100%… And have a very happy and healthy little girl to show for it. It’s time we support what’s healthy (breast feeding) instead of judge it.”

Licia Ronzulli took her seven-week-old baby to work at the European parliament September 2010. Cradling her daughter in a sling, she voted on proposals to improve women's employment rights. Ronzulli said, "It was not a political gesture. It was first of all a maternal gesture – that I wanted to stay with my daughter as much as possible, and to remind people that there are women who do not have this opportunity [to bring their children to work], that we should do something to talk about this.

Time passes so quickly, and the sweetest moments with your children can be but a blur. This is one of my favorites with the original Love Bug.

Let's move past the mommy wars and celebrate what is really important...the loving bond between parent and child.

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day! To be a mother is a divine gift and a profound responsibility. Thank you to all of the mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, and mothers in heart.

"I looked on child rearing not only as a work of love and duty but as a profession that was fully as interesting and challenging as any honorable profession in the world and one that demanded the best that I could bring to it."

Our Smallest Supporters Give Big

We are simply delighted to share the story of our smallest supporters who gave in a big way! The second-grade girls of Brownie Troop 25346 hosted a charity baby shower on February 12 to benefit three Houston mothers in need.

After hearing the personal stories of three moms and viewing their Love Bug Bundles registries, the group of 16 girls began to plan how they would meet the needs. Together with their families, the girls collected all of the requested baby essentials, including some special requests like a food processor and cooking utensils. One mother and daughter had a goal to provide $100 in baby food. The dozens of jars filled a large Girl Scout Cookie box (it's that time of year!), but they marveled at how quickly the baby will probably need more. We are still marveling at all of the donations...three trunk loads!

The curiosity, spirit, and budding sense of compassion of these 7 and 8 year olds were remarkable. We had the best Sunday afternoon talking with these little girls about big issues like poverty and profound joys like swaddling a baby. The girls took the hands-on swaddling lesson seriously and mastered wrapping their dolls. As we discussed all babies' need for love, one Brownie said, "And love is free!" At the end of our talk, we gave the girls magic wands as a reminder of their power to help others.

Congratulations are in order because each girl earned her Baby Shower badge! Thank you also to troop mom and Love Bug Bundles volunteer, Erin Gottlieb, for planning a project to inspire empathy and compassion.

We would love to help you create a baby shower with the young children in your life, whether it is a Brownie Troop, play group, church, or school. This isn't just fun for the little girls...we also think this could be a great mom's night out event! Please feel free to contact us for more information at info@lovebugbundles.com.

A Look Back at 2011

Happy New Year! 2011 was a year of wonderful stepping stones for Love Bug Bundles, and we are looking forward to taking leaps and bounds in 2012. Now for a little retrospective...

Our Giving
Thanks to your generosity, we donated 51 new infant bath tubs, more than 2,500 pieces of gently used infant clothing, and hundreds of other basic necessities, such as new infant clothing, toiletries, wash cloths, Lansinoh cream, baby wipes, and diaper bags to Houston families. We are hopeful that this year will bring many more opportunities to share as much love as we can with those who need it most.

Our Growth
As an organization that started as a personal charity project, we achieved a major milestone this year...we became an official non-profit corporation. Jessica Morrison, an associate at the Austin-based law firm Thompson & Knight LLP, volunteered to help us pro bono. Jessica's commitment, diligence, enthusiasm, and kindness helped us navigate the process of becoming a non-profit corporation in the state of Texas and obtaining 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt status. We are truly grateful for Jessica's support in this transformational step toward fulfilling the Love Bug Bundles mission.

Our Joy
With love and gratitude, we welcomed our third love bug, Evangeline Sejal, born on September 9, 2011. Our first love bug, Micah, will be four in January; and our second love bug, Isabel, will be two in February. As we also prepare to celebrate the 4th anniversary of Love Bug Bundles in March, we are amazed by how we have grown as an organization and as a family.

Our Gratitude
We are humbled by every donation, large or small. Every little thing matters. We sincerely thank you for every item you donated, whether it was an infant bath tub, wash cloths, bath wash, diapers, baby wipes, clothing, a diaper bag, or breast pump. Thank you also to those who gave monetary donations...every dollar matters.

Our Hope
2012 promises to be our best year yet! We are grateful for the support you have given at our past events and look forward to creating new events that will become Love Bug traditions. "Love" is in our name because it's at the heart of our mission. We'll be sending details on a Valentine's Day event soon!

Here's to you! May hope, joy, peace, and LOVE be yours!

Showered with Love

In April, the Bellaire Young Mothers dedicated their annual spring baby shower to Love Bug Bundles for the second time. The "Rub-a-Dub-Dub" Baby Shower built on last year's successful infant bath tub drive, providing an exciting opportunity to help mothers and their newborns start their lives together in positive ways.

As all mothers know, bonding with your newborn is essential. Daily activities such as bath time provide some of the greatest opportunities to focus on a new little one. You will never know just how much you give a mother when you take away some of the worry.

This year's drive raised 27 infant bath tubs, as well as a collection of bath time amenities and wash cloths.

Thanks again to all the Bellaire Young Mothers for being a moms who care about other moms!

Your Love Delivered!

Your love delivered, and we are grateful! This summer, your FAIR DAY Picnic & Diaper Drive donations totaled 13,408 diapers. This fall, those diapers are going to teen mothers in Houston-area high schools. Read more about the first annual FAIR DAY.

On the morning of the 1st Annual Love Bug Bundles FAIR DAY Picnic & Diaper Drive, the board arrived to set up in the already sweltering Houston heat with one wish:
10,000 diapers

To be honest, we were not convinced our goal was attainable. However, we planned to do everything in our power to achieve it while also providing a day of good old-fashioned family fun. In our tradition of hosting creative events that make giving fun, we planned nostalgic activities like kickball, cooking out, family photos, face painting, relays, and more.

Promptly at 10:00 a.m., a group dressed in red shirts began walking toward the pavilion. As they came closer, we could see it was one of our kickball teams, the Roaches. Their spirit set the tone for the day.

Diapers began piling up. Food went on the grill. Families posed in our picnic backdrop for snapshots. And...the kickball tournament began! The Roaches, Lightning Bugs, Stink Bugs, and Doodle Bugs played their hearts out. In the end, the Roaches were the champs.

The event also marked a greater step toward community involvement. We were honored to welcome special guest Fort Bend County Council Member Felecia Evans-Smith, who not only offered invaluable advice but also rolled up her sleeves and helped at the event.

As a four-person volunteer board, we were grateful for the volunteer support that was essential to hosting such a large-scale event. In addition to our wonderful family and friends, members of Bellaire Young Mothers provided an energizing force around the diaper drive.

As FAIR DAY came to a close, our diaper tally had reached 7,300 and we filled a large SUV. However, the donations kept coming through our Amazon.com registry. After a final count, your love delivered:
13,408 diapers

Thank you for your diaper donations! We are grateful for your support and hope to see you again soon!

We are pleased to share that all of the diapers have been delivered to teen mothers at Houston-area high schools.

Why It Matters

Today I was packing bundles for the June 4 baby shower at Magnolia Clinic of El Centro de Corazón. In the past, I have worked away late at night after the little ones are fast asleep, but this afternoon my 2-year-old son, Micah, was by my side. For months, he has been aware of the piles of infant bath tubs, diapers, clothing, and blankets growing in our house. We have talked about how these are for little babies like his new sister, Isabel. I realized that I could transform his natural interest into involvement, so I invited him to help me pack the Love Bug Bundles. What a moment. My inspiration and the original love bug is now helping bring necessities to other little love bugs.

Micah loved every minute of the process. Every time he placed an item in a bundle, he pointed to "Micah's" belongings. He even proudly showed me "Micah's" childproofing lock that keeps him out of our armoire. When I think of all of you who donated these baby items, I hope you know that nothing is too small to matter. A childproofing lock brings peace of mind in our home. And it will in anyone else's home. The blanket swaddling my baby girl brings her comfort and security. And it will to any little baby.

For the May 25 shower at Spring Branch Family Clinic, we delivered 12 Love Bug Bundles filled with infant bath tubs, receiving blankets, onesies, wash cloths, childproofing items, ice packs, and nursing cream. For the June 4 shower at Magnolia Clinic of El Centro de Corazón, we will be delivering 9 bundles.

Thank you again for all you do to make our work possible. Every little thing matters.

Thank You Bellaire Young Mothers

Bellaire Young Mothers are simply AMAZING! Thank you for hosting the spring baby shower benefitting Love Bug. This morning, FedEx delivered 23 boxes from Amazon.com filled with 43 infant bath tubs...and we have received lots of other baby essentials from caring mothers. This marks our largest single donation of baby essentials in our two-year history.

As a small grass-roots organization, we depend on regular donations to continue our programs. Thank you for being such a positive force in your community. Your donations will help so many wonderful families.
